One of the things I find most challenging when looking for books beyond the picture book stage is finding an author or series that speaks to boys. The abundance of book series for girls is daunting, and while we aren't picky it's nice to find one that speaks to guys (insert Tim the Toolman grunt here).
Rex Stone hits the nail on the head for boys. Using good grammar, decent science (ignoring the magic cave that leads to dino land), and good story telling (there's a magic cave that leads you to dino land!) he ropes you in to the exploration adventures of two boys. The boys meet one day on the beach, become friends, and start exploring. Nothing is too scary or violent, but the adventures are exciting all the same. The vocabulary is simple, other than the dinosaur names there aren't any tricky words, and the pace is quick enough that it will keep the pages turning.
